Our Story: A Place to Call Home in Southeast Alaska

Nestled in the heart of Juneau, Riverview Senior Living and Memory Care is more than just a residence—it’s a trusted home for elders across Southeast Alaska and beyond. Rooted in a deep respect for the generations who built our communities—from Sitka to Ketchikan—we are committed to providing compassionate, dignified care for those who deserve it most.

At Riverview, we offer more than a place to live. We offer a place to thrive—surrounded by the natural beauty of Southeast Alaska, supported by skilled professionals, and enriched by meaningful connections. Whether a resident needs daily assistance or specialized memory care, our team meets them with heart, patience, and understanding.

This is our home too—and here, every resident becomes part of the Riverview family.

Meeting a Growing Need

Finding safe, supportive housing in Juneau is challenging, especially for older adults who want to stay close to home but need a higher level of care. Alaska’s aging population is growing rapidly, and in Southeast Alaska, nearly one in four adults is over the age of 60, according to state data.

Until Riverview opened, many local seniors faced limited choices. Wildflower Court offers long-term skilled nursing care. Trillium Landing and Fireweed Place provide independent apartment living. The state-run Pioneer Home in Juneau offers a range of care levels—but space is limited and the waitlist is long.

For many elders who didn’t meet the criteria or couldn’t wait for the Pioneer Home, the only remaining option was to leave Juneau—sometimes permanently.

This loss struck a chord with community leaders.

A Vision Becomes Reality

Sioux Douglas, longtime community advocate and president of the nonprofit Senior Citizens Support Services, Inc., recognized this critical gap in care.

“Some people who needed assisted care, but weren’t on the Pioneer Home list—or had to wait way too long—found that the only thing they could do was move out of state or to Anchorage,” Douglas shared. “We lost several longtime community members who had no choice but to leave in order to get the care they needed.”

What began as a heartfelt concern grew into a focused mission. The nonprofit spearheaded a years-long search for a development partner willing to help create a new model of senior living in Juneau.

After many meetings with city leaders and several potential developers, Torrey Pines Development, a California-based firm, stepped in. With strong community support and the help of the City and Borough of Juneau—which offered incentives such as property tax relief and an innovative lease structure—Torrey Pines brought the vision to life.

Riverview is not just an answer to a housing need. It’s a promise kept—to our elders, to their families, and to the future of aging in Southeast Alaska.
